Spotlight January 13, 2010
NAME: Shelby Crane
HOME STATE:Aztec, New Mexico
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SHOW AND WHY? My favorite show is the National Western Stock Show. There is so much to do and look at. The quality of livestock is great and the shows are very competitive.
WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST SHOW ACCOMPLISHMENT? I have two big show accomplishments. One was winning the New Mexico Cattle growers Senior Showmanship at the 2009 New Mexico State Fair. It was an honor to be selected and to attend the annual awards banquet to receive my buckle. The other was having the 2009 Champion Shorthorn Steer at the Arizona Nationals with a steer named “Goob.”
WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION? I have many people in my life who inspire me. Competing in the junior livestock show program requires a lot of help, advice, and mentors. My biggest inspiration would have to be my Kirtland FFA Ag teacher, Mr. Joe Chavez. He always has words of encouragement, an honest opinion, and my best interest as his priority. He is always there to help my family. He has taught me how to livestock judge and I hope one day to use the skills he has taught me at a collegiate level.
WHAT IS A NORMAL DAILY ROUTINE FOR YOU? (SCHOOL, WORKING WITH ANIMALS, EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES) There is definitely a difference between my summer and winter normal day routines. In the summer there is one priority at our house and it is getting the steers ready to show. We get up around 5am and the focus is on getting the steers into the cool barn before sunrise. We feed the steers, rinse and blow, work their hair, and practice showing. We then maintain them throughout the day. At around 9pm we do it all over again and let them out into the pasture so they can stretch out. My winter routine includes taking care of my steers before and after school. One great thing is that it is cold outside so I don’t have to put them into the cool barn. I am on the judging team for my FFA chapter. Last year as a freshman my team won the state horticulture contest. This year I am judging on the livestock team. I also play basketball for my high school. We have a great basketball program that has won many state championships. I
WHO HAS HELPED YOU THE MOST WITH YOUR PROJECTS? There are many people who have helped me with my projects. My parents- Matt and Jackie Crane, my brother - Dylan Crane, my grandparents- Gordon and Dorcas Crane, without my family none of this would be possible for me. Many friends have been made from this program and their help has been invaluable: Joaquin & Shawntae Lesky, Brian & Bill Rojas and their families, Joe Chavez, Jess Shirley, Dee McCall, Eric Drager, Travis Stenburg, Tracy Haymes, Storm & Darlene Gerhart. There are so many more people who have help me. Thank You!!
WHAT IS THE ONE SHOW YOU HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO WIN AND WHY? I have always wanted to win the National Western Stock Show. I have been a spectator at the show for many years . I will be taking a fat steer named “Lobo” and a prospect steer named “Heartattack” to the 2010 NWSS. I am very excited and nervous to compete at this show. It would be a great honor to compete and win the National Western Stock Show
WHAT IS YOR FAVORITE ANIMAL OF ALL TIME AND WHY? My favorite steer of all time would have to be my shorthorn steer named “goob.” As a prospect he was Grand Champion of the NM Beef Expo. As a fat steer he was Champion Shorthorn at the Arizona Nationals. He loved to run through the pasture with his white tail straight up in the air. He had the coolest hide. He had the most wonderful personality and I enjoyed raising him.
IF YOU COULD HANG OUT WITH ONE PERSON AT A SHOW FOR A DAY WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY? This question stumped me. I just cant think of just ONE person I would like to hang out with at a show. I love going to shows and hanging out with all of the breeders, fitters, and show families. Most of these people I only get to see once a year.
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE JUDGE AND WHY? I don’t have a favorite judge. I respect any judge who evaluates and talks livestock honestly.
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS? I plan on graduating Kirtland High School in 2012. While in high school I will continue to show steers, livestock judge, and play basketball. My dream is to attend college at Oklahoma State University and be a “Cowboy.” I would love to earn a spot on the Livestock Judging Team at either OSU or a junior college. My career plans is to pursue a degree in Veterinarian Medicine.
WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU WOULD RECOMMEND TO OHER EXHIBITORS? The one thing I recommend to other exhibitors is: If we all could learn to handle losing in the same manner that we love to win. Then I think we the exhibitor would have learned a valuable lesson.
PS Although winning is the greatest feeling
